KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) — Naza Automative Manufacturing Sdn Bhd which plans to construct a RM950 million assembly plant in South India has now requested additional land for its expansion exercise.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said Naza had requested for more land and the state government is likely to approve it.
“First they asked for 150 acres of land, the state government was prepared to give the 150 acres.
“Now they have asked for 200 acres and I don’t think there is going to be any objection in giving that land,” he told reporters after launching the International Construction Week 2006, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), here Wednesday.
Naza, a leading automotive company, is planning to expand its operations and views India as a potential market — with its affluent 300 million strong middle class.
The company plans to set up the assembly plant in Sriperumbudur, in Tamil Nadu to produce Naza and Kia vehicles.
Samy Vellu said the state government has also requested for more information from the auto company and once they are furnished, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would decide on a new date to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU).
Initially, Naza and the state government agreed to sign a MoU on Sept 11 but this was postponed.
Samy Vellu said he also met Karunanidhi last week during his visit to India and discussed the matter.
